Mass deep fake campaign targets the US presidential election

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) analyzed an online influence campaign orchestrated by a Chinese network to disrupt the US presidential elections. This operation, dubbed ‘Spamouflage’ due to its deceptive tactics, has been linked to the Communist Party of China (CCP).  The campaign employs AI and a network of social media accounts to discuss and…

Deep fakes, deep impacts: critical thinking in the AI era

Can humans learn to reliably detect AI-generated fakes? How do they impact us on a cognitive level? OpenAI’s Sora system recently previewed a new wave of synthetic video and AI-powered media. It probably won’t be long before any form of realistic media – audio, video, or image – can be generated with prompts in mere…

Video generation

Video generation models as world simulators

We explore large-scale training of generative models on video data. Specifically, we train text-conditional diffusion models jointly on videos and images of variable durations, resolutions and aspect ratios. We leverage a transformer architecture that operates on spacetime patches of video and image latent codes. Our largest model, Sora, is capable of generating a minute of high fidelity video. Our results suggest that scaling video generation models is a promising path towards building general purpose simulators of the physical world.

OpenAI says Voice Engine might be too risky to release

OpenAI says it ran a small-scale test of its new voice cloning product Voice Engine with a few select partners. The results show promising applications for the tech, but safety concerns may keep it from being released. OpenAI says that Voice Engine can clone a human’s voice based on a single 15-second recording of their voice. The tool can then generate “natural-sounding speech that closely resembles the original speaker.” Once cloned, Voice Engine can turn text inputs into audible speech using “emotive and realistic voices.” The tool’s capability makes exciting applications possible but raises serious safety issues too. Promising use
